Event Description

Escape the southern AZ heat and join us in Flagstaff for one of the area's most popular four wheeling destinations. Home of where much of the NASA Lunar Rover (the ultimate Land Rover?) was tested, you can expect trails with soft cinders, challenging hills, and thrilling descents.

To start this trip, we will meet at Bonito Camp Ground, just outside of the Sunset Crater Park entrance between 4 and 6 pm.  To coordinate the camping here, one of our members will secure camp sites Friday morning. Anticipate sharing a site, where two trucks and two tents can easily fit. If you require more space, please contact the trail leader before Thursday morning.

Saturday morning, we will hit the trails ready to explore the vast landscape of cinders. Plan to air down, and come prepared for a recovery. Many of the trails in the recreation area are rough enough that you should secure any and all heavy objects in your truck.  Sunday will be on your own.  Be sure to ask your TL for details on trails in the area if you plan to finish off the weekend in the Flagstaff dirt.

On Saturday, we will use both ham radio (146.510) and FRS (ch 2-00). If you need directions on Friday, call your TL (a phone number will be sent via email before the event), or by radio on the 146.980 Mt Elden repeater.

Venue Description

The Cinder Hills is a scenic recreation area enjoyed by many off-highway vehicle enthusiasts. Its numerous volcanic cinder cones and craters surrounded by a ponderosa pine forest environment gives the area its unique value. Due to a growing interest in this area for off-highway vehicle recreation, additional management direction is needed to protect sensitive resources and to provide for continuing use of this recreation.

Approximately 13,500 acres in the Cinder Hills has been designated for off-highway vehicle recreation. Management emphasis is for the use of 2-, 3-, and 4-wheel vehicles.

On site camping is available in dispersed areas of the recreation area, or in the nearby Bonito Campground outside of Sunset Crater Park.
