Hello from Australia

Hello from Australia was created by
Hello from Brisbane.

I have just joined this forum tonight for the first time and thought I should introduce myself.

I am heading to retirement and have been associated with Land Rovers for most of my life. I had my first ride in my late grandfathers' 1950 Series 1 80" back in about 1955 and I actually learned to drive this same truck when I was 12. He was a cattleman ranching in the mountains of northern New South Wales, as were all my uncles and my Dad - they all had Land Rovers in the 1950s and 60s because the terrain was exceptionally rugged and apart from Willys Jeeps there was simply nothing else around that came near them for cross country capability.

Anyway, my interest in this forum is because I am coming to Tucson in late May to a conference with my 18 year old son Angus and thought it would be a great opportunity to meet some fellow enthusiasts - hopefully someone with one or more Series Land Rovers. I like to take photos of the older trucks and over the years have quite a collection, especially from my work in Africa and Asia.

My own truck is a Series 3 88" SWB truck cab that is slowly undergoing some restoration with an aim to getting it back on the road for a large 65th Anniversity gathering next year.

Hope to meet you soon,

Cheers,

Neil

Hi Neil,

Welcome to the forum.

I passed your comments over to a long term series and land rover owner in Tucson who doesn't get on the forum much. Hopefully he will get in touch and you guys can get together with some of the other series guys down there when you visit?

Thx

Ian

Ian,

Hello again from Brisbane.

Thanks for your response - looking forward to hearing from some members soon.

I am in Tuscon basically from 28th May to 1st June for a conference at the University.

I tried to post a couple of photos last night of my own truck off photobucket but the image was apparently too big. No doubt there is an easy way that someone can explain.

Cheers,

Neil

Hi Neil - I think the maximum with for images in our forum is 800px (if not 800, then 600px). Not sure on file size, but most images at 800px at 72dpi resolution are well under the max file size.

Let me know if you need further assistance, and welcome to the forum!

Thanks for posting the photos - I hasten to add that my truck is only in the first 3 photos. It is a fairly sedate ride for a 37 year old pensioner.

The last 3 photos of Armygeddon were just throw ins..........

The Army modified a wrecked 6 X 6 Perentie (Australian name for the last generation of military Land Rovers - also a sand lizard) to take to drag and burnout shows around the country as a bit of recruiting bait for the young bucks. It has recently been retired after a bit of controversy from the folks who think the Defence budget might be better spent elsewhere - e.g. on guns and ammunition..... It has a blown 7 litre V8 motor developing around 700BHP etc. Now headed to the Military Museum in Bandiana, Victoria. You can see it wasting fuel and tyres in the following:

Hello again.

I am sitting in the departure lounge at LAX steeling myself up for the 15 hour flight home to Australia.

Just want to thank the various US Land Rover friends that my son and I made here over the last couple of weeks. We put up 4500 miles in a little over 2 weeks (admittedly in a hire Ford Fusion)including stays in Tucson and Las Cruces for my rangelands research work.

As ever, the people and the landscapes were memorable and while I think my own country has much to offer the serious off-roader, the opportunities that you have in your own part of the world are simply enticing.

I must give special mention to AZLRO member Rob Modica who kindly hosted us in Tucson and gave us access to his great collection of old and new Land Rovers. We had a terrific time.

All the best,

Neil MacLeod
