Following a Navajo guide, the group will leave the valley floor to climb high atop Hunt’s Mesa. The vista from Hunt’s Mesa is something you’ll remember for a lifetime, and a view that few people will ever experience due to private land laws of the Navajo Nation.

From that majestic point the trip continues north to Halls Crossing on the eastern shores of beautiful Lake Powell, where the famous historic Hole in the Rock Trail begins.

The trail works its way through gentle red-rock banks, steep canyon climbs and descents, and plenty of history as it meanders southwest along the San Juan arm of Lake Powell. A high point on the trail is reaching Grey’s Mesa, which runs along the “Great Bend” of the lake. The terrain will test not only the most technically experienced driver, but the capabilities of most 4-wheel drives.

The entire adventure will cover four days of driving with 3-4 nights of Arizona/Utah wilderness camping. The general pace of the trip will be casual, giving way to many photo opportunities. At the trail’s end, there is an optional 3-4 mile hike down to the shores of Lake Powell for the more adventurous souls.

Following the return trip to pavement, the group will retrace its route south to Flagstaff, Arizona, just in time for the opening of the 2012 Overland Expo, which takes place May 18–20. The Expo will put the final touches on an unforgettable week in the beautiful Southwest. Sit back, relax and learn valuable skills and mingle with the overlanding industry’s most respected experts and suppliers.

TRIP DETAILS, REQUIREMENTS, AND DISCLAIMERS

AZLRO’s epic adventure IS NOT a trip for beginners. The terrain we will cover will challenge advanced drivers as well as the best off road 4×4 vehicles.

AZLRO has set minimum requirements for all vehicles. Prior to departure, each vehicle will be inspected to ensure the following.

31-inch tires, or larger

Off-road, or all-terrain tires (no street tires)

Front and rear frame-mounted recovery points. (Rear receiver hitches OK)

Full size spare tire with good tread

Tire repair kit with fresh plugs

First aid kit (well stocked)

CB radio (preferred, but FRS acceptable)

Working jack (capable, in working condition, and able to lift vehicle)

Portable toilets (must carry out solid waste)

1 bundle of firewood

The following equipment is recommended, but not required, to ensure an enjoyable trip with minimal opportunity for vehicle damage.

Rear locker

Traction control

Rock sliders (sill damage highly likely without)

Winch

Air compressor or some other method of filling tires

Hi-lift jack

No anti-theft lug nuts

Adult beverages are allowed, but only after each day’s driving, and once we are at camp. No alcohol will be allowed during the day during driving.

Body damage to vehicles is not only possible, but likely depending on tire size, vehicle lift and body protection. Rollovers are possible if driver is not extremely careful. Slow, articulated driving and listening to your spotter is a MUST for this trip.

In addition, as we will be away from services most the time, self-sufficient camping is required. This means there will be no water, electricity, toilets, etc. You must pack everything in and you must pack everything out (including your own human waste). This will be the case for 4 nights on the trail.

We have these requirements and recommendations because of the potential large size of the groups, and want to ensure that the trip is enjoyable for all attending. We will be in extremely remote areas.

No refunds save one exception: Any vehicle not meeting trail guides’ requirements when reviewing registrations may be eligible for refund.

Rough Itinerary

Monday, May 14th

7 AM – 12 AM

Travel from Cottonwood to Kayenta

1 PM – 5 PM

Travel to Hunt’s Mesa
Camping Tuesday night on Hunt’s Mesa

Tuesday, May 15th

8 AM – 11 AM

Travel from Hunt’s Mesa to Monument Valley

11 AM – 1 PM

Travel North to Meet Bill Burke near trailhead

Tuesday – Thursday

Hole in the Rock Trail, 2 or 3 nights of camping on trail.
